Why Restrictive Diets Always Fail

Sara shares her story about how she struggled for years with weight loss and her secret for finally achieving success.

It’s no secret that restrictive diets don’t work. The key word being: restrictive.

The word itself implies a lack of freedom, a feeling of being trapped and restricted. And that’s exactly how you feel when you’re on a diet. You’re depriving yourself of the foods you love, and likely feeling miserable while doing it.

When I was in my teens and early 20s, I had no problems with weight. I could eat whatever I wanted and stay slim. But then, as I reached my mid-20s and beyond, it all changed. Suddenly, the weight started to creep on, and no matter what I did, I couldn’t lose it again.

By age 28, I was 20 pounds overweight. By 29, it was 35 pounds.

So, like many people in my situation, I turned to dieting.

And at first, I thought I had it all figured out, as the weight started to come off. But it didn’t take long for the cracks to start showing.

I cut out carbs and restricted my calories. I was like my own drill sergeant, constantly berating myself for every little slip-up. If I ate a cookie, I’d spend the whole day feeling guilty and like a failure. It was an all-consuming obsession.

I was always hungry, my energy levels were low, and I was constantly thinking about food. The restrictive diet had taken over my life, and I wasn’t enjoying anything anymore.

The worst part? The weight always came back, and then some. I started exercising more and restricting my diet more – but none of that helped either. It was an endless cycle of deprivation and weight gain that left me feeling defeated and frustrated.

I was right back at square one just months before turning 30, and I knew something had to change.

“What Am I Doing Wrong?”

That’s precisely the question I asked myself every time the scale went up. I started digging into other diets like Keto, Paleo, Atkins, and more, but realized that they all had one common factor: they weren’t sustainable and only provided short-term results.

I craved sustainability, I wanted to find a way of eating that would be good for my long-term health, and help me reach and maintain my ideal weight. I didn’t want to starve anymore, I wanted to eat enjoyably and healthily.

The answer was simple, though it took me a long time to realize it: there is no perfect diet. Every single person is different, and what works for one person might not work for another. It’s important to find a way of eating that works for you and your body, without restriction.

Most diet solutions are completely ineffective for the same reason…

If you have ever made cookies, you know that there is a cutter for each different shape. A round cutter will make a round cookie, a star-shaped cutter will make a star-shaped cookie, and so on. But what happens when you try to cut a square cookie with a round cutter? It simply doesn’t work. The same goes for restrictive diets – they’re not tailored to you and therefore won’t fit your needs.

But there was also something else I learned along the way.

Your diet should focus on improving your overall health to help you lose weight. Otherwise, you’re letting inflammation, hormone imbalances, and other issues run the show— making yourself susceptible to all sorts of health problems.

Choose a anti-inflammation diet

Finding out the reason behind my weight gain was the first step in my journey to finally ditching restrictive diets for good.

How an anti-inflammation diet works

Sara’s story isn’t unique. In fact, it’s a story we hear time and time again. People gain weight for all sorts of reasons – some beyond their control. But, those who approach weight loss with a whole-health perspective, are more likely to find long-term success. Cravings don’t happen anymore because they feel nourished, sustained, and ready to conquer the day.

It all starts with cutting out those processed foods and sugars that cause inflammation to surge through your body and incorporating exercise into your daily routine. But the ultimate solution? Throwing away the one-size-fits-all plan and receiving an anti-inflammation diet plan made just for you.

By getting a handle on your nutrition instead of restricting it, your mind and body will thank you.
