How I Got Rid of Bloating After 50 Plus

My whole life, I never realized that chronic bloating means your gut health is in danger.

Most people bloat up after a big meal, like during Thanksgiving dinner. However, I’m not like most people. I bloated after EVERY meal.

You might be inclined to think I just ate too much and stuffed myself like a greedy pig. I’d have thought that too except I was cutting my portions down.

I wasn’t always like this, you know. It wasn’t until I started getting older. After I hit 50 and moved beyond it, the bloating just got worse.

And it was beyond uncomfortable.

My clothes always felt like they were squeezing me like angry pythons. I’d get the stupidest comments about it too, people thinking they were funny and making a joke but it was hurtful. “Wow, you really packed on the pounds! Can you still get pregnant at your age?”

Eventually, I just hid in my home and tried to avoid everyone. I felt lonely and miserable. And on top of that, I felt heavy and bloated.

The only thing I ever did was tend to my garden in the backyard. One day while doing that, I broke down in tears. It was at that moment that my neighbors breached etiquette by coming into my yard. They were worried I’d fallen and hurt myself.

I was so embarrassed but they were as kind as could be. This older couple, maybe 15 years older than me, stayed there to calm me down. They’d moved in just months before and I hadn’t had a chance to get to know them.

Here they were, getting to know me now. The wife ran across the yard to go make some tea for us. The husband, a retired doctor, listened intently to why I was so upset. As it turns out, he was a gastroenterologist when he was practicing.

“Bloating is a sign from your gut that it needs to heal,” he explained. “Getting to the root cause of it is going to clear it up.”

Suddenly, it felt like there was a light at the end of the tunnel. What I learned from my retired doctor’s neighbor changed everything in an instant.

The Main Cause of Bloating

When you’re bloated, it is due to gas in your gut. Foods ferment in your colon, plus you may swallow too much air, be constipated, have more fluids in your bowels, or even have a food tolerance. All this can cause upset and imbalance in the microbiome of your gut.

What I learned from the doctor is that the gut is also tied to immunity. When you have inflammation in your gut, it’s far deeper than feeling gassy and looking like a giant beach ball. It causes fatigue, chronic diseases, mood disorders, and hormonal imbalances.

Bloating is incredibly common, and I always knew I couldn’t be the only one with it. But still, what I didn’t know was that this inflammation in my digestive tract was the root. And once I found it, my bloating stopped.

How an Anti-Inflammatory Diet Helped Me

Talking to my neighbors, especially the retired doctor, made me realize I needed to eat things that were anti-inflammatory. Basically, an anti-inflammatory diet is a whole-body approach toward better health. You eat fresh foods and healthy fats to give your gut the balance it needs with good bacteria.

In doing that, you beat that bloating.

It was amazing because I felt fatigued every day and bloated like a balloon. Once I took that advice about an anti-inflammatory diet, everything changed. My bloating stopped and I felt wonderful again, for the first time in years. I didn’t think I’d ever feel like that again, honestly. I just thought I was getting old and there was nothing I could do about it.

How to Follow an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Anti-inflammatory diets relieve the inflammation that causes bloating. You take a holistic approach to your health instead of targeting one area. It’s been a great journey, though I want you to know a few things.

You have to eat the right foods. And you have to do what works for you because what works for me may not be the right fit for you. I absolutely recommend an anti-inflammatory diet though, one that helps you build it to fit your needs even after you hit your 50s and beyond.

One-size-fits-all diets never work right, which is why you won’t get results if you just follow some cookie-cutter thing you find online. The one I used below started with a quick quiz to assess my lifestyle and guide me in the right direction, and it gave me my life and health back, even at my age!
